Basically, the Übergaiter is a neck gaiter which can be pulled up over the helmet to provide complete protection for the wearer's face. It can be used in various ways -
- Down Position - worn around the neck, like a normal gaiter or scarf, to keep the neck warm
- Up Position - pulled up to the top of the helmet at the back, and to the base of the goggles at the front. This provides maximum protection from extreme weather
- Conversation Position - pulled up at the back, but left under the chin at the front. The idea here is that the Übergaiter can be quickly pulled down from the Up Position to have a chat, before returning to the Up Position
- Bag Mode - The Übergaiter can also be used as a bag, to contain helmet, goggles, gloves etc. (see photo below)
- Neckwarmer Mode - Can also be worn in a non-skisports scenario as a normal gaiter

The key features of the Übergaiter include -
- An elastic drawcord and barrel cord lock along the top of the Übergaiter to allow it to be tightened and stop wind getting in
- A curved nose-piece to ensure there are no gaps between the goggles and the Übergaiter
- 2 Stopper (a.k.a. positioning) Clips to attach to the top of the helmet to stop the Übergaiter sliding forwards
- A drawcord along the bottom to allow the Übergaiter to be used as a bag (see above).
CONCEPT PROGRESSION
Below are the concept sketches produced in weeks 3 and 5 for my design.
My beta prototype has ended up being a combination of the 2 designs - using the positioning clip from week 5, and the drawcord with barrel cord lock from week 3. I've removed the breathing vent featured in both those concepts, as it didn't seem to be necessary.
